Supported File Types for Uploading and Previewing

Summary

Question Answer
Can I upload any file type? Yes. All file types can be uploaded and stored in your Bynder portal.
Can I preview any file type? No. Only specific file types support preview generation (see How? section below).
Maximum file size for preview 50 GB
Maximum image dimension for preview 25,000 pixels (temporarily reduced from 50,000 pixels)*
Maximum video dimension for preview 8,192 x 8,192 pixels
Maximum Office file size for preview 400 MB
Can I change a file's type on a new version? No, doing so removes the preview thumbnail

*Note: Preview support for 50,000 pixel images is temporarily reduced to 25,000 pixels to improve functionality.

Why?

Benefit Description
Universal storage All file types can be uploaded and stored in the portal
Preview capability Supported file types generate a preview, up to a max file size of 50 GB, and a max pixel size of 25,000 pixels in one dimension

How?

Step 1: Confirm your file type supports preview

Category File Types
Images ai¹, bmp, dng, eps, gif, indd, jpg, png, psb, psd, raw, sketch, svg, tif, tiff, webp, heic, avif
Documents² doc, docx, pdf, ppt, pptx
Videos mp4, wmv, mpeg, mov (ProRes), avi, flv, vob, mkv, m4v, f4v, 3gpp, 3gp, ogv, ts, mts, m2ts, 3g2, m2v, webm, mxf
3D glb
  • ¹ Adobe Illustrator file previews may experience issues when created with "tiling patterns."
  • ² Document previews (except PDF): Custom fonts of office documents are supported. Not all subfamilies are fully supported, depending on the custom font used, due to limitations in the third-party library used.

Step 2: Check the file against size and dimension limits

Category Limit
Preview (all files) Max file size of 50 GB and max pixel size of 25,000 pixels in one dimension
Videos Videos that exceed 8,192 (width) x 8,192 (height) pixels will not have preview capabilities
Office files Maximum supported file size is 400 MB; files larger than that can be uploaded but a preview will not be generated

Step 3: If using custom fonts, upload the font to your portal

  • To ensure the custom font is preserved, it needs to be uploaded to your portal.
  • Supported subfamilies: Regular, Bold, Italic, Bold Italic, Medium, Thin, Black, Extra Light, Thin Italic, Semi Bold.
  • There might be cases where the third-party library fails to match the font.

Step 4: Enable animated preview settings, if needed

  • AVIF/GIF animated is available by default only when the asset is marked as public.
  • Workflow doesn't support animated AVIF/GIF.
  • If you want to change the default behavior and have AVIF/GIF animations enabled by default without needing to mark them as public, inform your Customer Success Manager to enable it for your portal.

Step 5: Upload the finalized version of edited videos

  • To generate a preview of an edited video, upload a finalized version of the asset rather than an intermediate format.

Step 6: Troubleshoot a missing preview

Issue Cause Resolution
No preview for the Office file File exceeds 400 MB The file can still be uploaded; a preview will not be generated
Emojis look grey in preview Emojis are rendered in greyscale using version 16 of the Noto font set This is expected; derivative documents will also display emojis in greyscale
Custom font looks different in preview Bynder cannot support all fonts in preview; some custom font subfamilies appear as the default font in preview The file itself continues to have the custom font
Supported file type still won't preview The file may have been flagged by the Waiting Room's antivirus feature, or the file may be password-protected Check the antivirus flag status or remove password protectionThe
.ai file won't preview The file was not saved as a PDF-compatible file Save the file as a PDF-compatible file
.dwg file shows a generic icon Bynder does not natively generate visual 2D/3D image previews or thumbnails for .dwg files File displays a standard generic file icon thumbnail; users can still download and share the raw .dwg source files normally
