How to Create and Use Components in Studio

Summary

Components (formerly known as Presets) allow users to save, organize, and reuse design elements within Studio. By saving elements as a component, you preserve their properties - including animations, transitions, text styles, and positioning - allowing you to quickly drop them into new designs.

This feature/solution requires your Customer Success Contact to enable, but then individual permissions can be done by the Bynder Admin.

How?

Creating a Component

  1. Navigate to Studio. Open a new or existing image or video design.
  2. Select Elements: Select the elements you wish to save. You can create a component from:
    • A single element
    • Multiple selected elements
    • Grouped elements
    • Note: You no longer need to group elements before saving them as a component.
  3. Initiate Save:
    • In the sidebar or via the contextual menu (three-dot menu), select Save as Component (keyboard shortcut: Cmd+P/ ⌘+P)
  4. Configure Details:
    • Name: By default, the component takes the name of the top element, but you can edit this before saving.
    • Description (Optional): Add a description (up to 120 characters) to help other users understand how to use the component.
    • Collection (Required): Select an existing Component Collection or create a new one before saving.
  5. Save: Click Save. The system will automatically generate a visual thumbnail for the gallery.

Adding a Component to a Design

  1. Open the Gallery: from the design editor, click add element/layer and choose component (keyboard shortcut P).
  2. Browse and Search
    • Browse visual thumbnails organized by Collections.
    • Use the Search bar to find components by name or description.
  3. Information: Click the action menu button on the card to view metadata like description and creation date.
  4. Apply: Click the component thumbnail to add it directly to your canvas.

Managing Components and Collections

  • Editing a component: use the action menu (three-dot menu) to rename a component, edit its description, or move it to a different collection.
  • Deleting: Components or entire collections can be deleted via the action menu. Deleting a collection will permanently remove all components inside it.
  • Organizing Collections: Collections are always sorted alphabetically for consistency.

FAQs and Limitations

How do Content Properties affect Components?

When you save a component that includes content properties, all instances of that component used within a design will share the same linked content properties. This means that changing the content properties in one instance will automatically update all other instances of that component in the design.

To reuse a component with different content (i.e., new header text but the same style), open the action menu and select “+ unique content properties”. This creates unique content properties for each component instance, so changes in one won't affect the other instances.

Can I use video elements in image designs?

No, video or audio components can't be added to image designs. However, image components can be used in video designs, where they'll appear for 5 seconds by default.

Do components have unique names?

No, component and collection names do not need to be unique.

How do I edit the actual component?

You can't edit the internal elements of a saved component. To make changes, add the component to your design, edit it on the canvas, and save it as a new component.

Are there video previews?

The current gallery supports static image thumbnails only; video playback within the gallery is not supported in the initial release.
