How To Use And Manage Audio In Studio

Summary

You can now manage audio in Studio using dedicated audio tracks on the timeline, providing the same level of control and flexibility as video clips. This updated functionality allows you to layer background music, voiceovers, and sound effects directly within your project.

Who?

This feature/solution requires your Customer Success Contact to enable, but then individual permissions can be done by the Bynder Admin.

Don't yet have Bynder? Start Here!

Once Studio is enabled, users with the Admin and Content Designer permissions can add audio files to designs in Studio. All users can embed audio files in video clips.

Why?

Bynder supports the need to customize your designs in Studio. We want to empower Studio users to make the content they want within Bynder. We have a dynamic audio editing tool that allows users to add and edit audio from the timeline with intuitive features such as trim, volume control, and timeline repositioning.

How?

Adding Audio Using The Timeline

  1. Navigate to Studio.
  2. Edit an existing video design.
  3. Click the + Add asset button.
  4. Select Audio, or press A from the editor to select an audio file.
    • Sources available for audio are:
      • Global assets (Bynder DAM)
      • Uploads
  5. Select the audio track and click Add asset.
  6. Trim the audio by adjusting the handles on the timeline or by entering a Start and End timecode value (MM:SS:FF) below the audio preview.

Managing Audio on the Timeline

Audio clips now function similarly to video clips, allowing for easy visual manipulation.

  • Reposition: Click and drag an audio clip to move it to a different point in time or to a different audio track.
  • Trim: Click and drag the start or end handles of an audio clip on the timeline to shorten or lengthen its duration.
  • Delete: Select an audio clip and press Delete or Backspace on your keyboard to remove it.
  • Layering: You can add multiple audio tracks to layer background music, voiceovers, and sound effects simultaneously.

Refining Audio in the Side Panel

When you select an audio clip on the timeline, the Properties side panel opens, offering advanced customization:

Audio Settings

  • Volume: Use the slider to adjust the output level of the selected clip.
  • Fade In/Fade Out: Use the sliders to set the duration (in seconds) for the audio to transition in or out smoothly.
  • Precise Timing: Manually enter values for Start, End, and Duration (Format: MM:SS:FF) for frame-perfect accuracy.

Asset Management

  • Create Content Property (learn more about content properties in Studio)
  • Swap Audio: Click the audio thumbnail in the side panel to replace the current clip with a different asset while maintaining your timeline settings.
  • Advanced Trimming: Click Trim to open a dedicated interface. Here, you can listen to the source file and select specific in/out points to use in your project.

Permissions and Restrictions

Use the toggles to enable or disable specific edit functions for end-users (Content Creators), ensuring brand consistency in templates:

  • Asset Source: Select a DAM collection with approved audio tracks, to limit replacement of assets by end-users.
  • Allow uploads: Allow end-users to replace the audio fragment with any uploaded content.
  • Allow users to mute/unmute in their final variation.

Locking

Click the Lock icon - to the left of the timeline - to prevent any changes to the audio clip by end-users.
The clip will not be visible to end-users in the content-creation mode.

FAQs

Can I still use audio embedded in my video files? Yes. If a video clip has its own audio, you can enable it by selecting the video in the timeline and toggling the Use audio switch in the properties sidebar.

What happened to "Global Audio"? Timeline Audio has replaced the legacy Global Audio functionality. Designs previously using Global Audio are migrated to the new timeline format to allow for better editing control.
Global Audio tracks are now visible and editable on Audio tracks 1 and 2.

What audio formats are supported? Studio supports standard audio formats including MP3, AIFF and WAV. For best results, we recommend a bitrate of at least 192 Kbps.
