Download Assets With Metadata

Bynder can write (or embed) the metaproperty information from Bynder to metadata fields upon download. This is helpful if you would like to keep this metadata available or if other systems are dependent on it. Upon download, the available metadata, as well as any metadata updates that were made within Bynder, can be written back to the same metadata tags or mapped to other standard XMP metadata tags that match your other systems' usage. This allows you to ensure that the metadata stays with the asset, even after it leaves Bynder. In addition, you can also export the available metadata to a CSV file.

Download assets with metadata

Who can download assets with embedded metadata and export metaproperties to CSV?

Users with the following right can download assets with embedded metadata and/or export metaproperties to CSV:

  • Export metadata csv file on download

Depending on the settings, the metadata can either include the original metadata (as of the upload date) or the updated metadata (as of the download date). The default XMP data will be embedded in the downloaded asset(s) and you can also choose to include Bynder metaproperty information as well. The default Bynder fields are title, description, tags, copyright, modified date, publication date, and creation date.

If your metadata should always be up-to-date because of legal requirements or other reasons, Bynder can make sure that only metadata configured in the DAM are present. In this way, we can remove all the original XMP metadata prior to the download and write the updated XMP metadata to the asset. The downloaded asset will then include the XMP metadata as it was edited/updated in the portal.

Note

  • The metadata of the original asset will not be added to any custom derivatives. Derivatives can have the metadata added within Bynder or from the original asset metadata that was extracted during upload and mapped to a metaproperty. Learn more about extracting and mapping metadata upon upload here.
  • XMP metadata embedded in PNGs might not display properly on Windows.

 

Enable this feature

Decide on the following options. Then, if you’re using the legacy taxonomy, contact your Customer Success Manager who is happy to further assist you in setting this up. Learn more about updating the settings on the new taxonomy here. 

  • Do you want to include XMP metadata upon download? Should this be optional or required for each downloaded asset?
  • Should the original metadata be deleted prior to the asset download in order to ensure only metadata configured in the DAM are present in the downloaded file?
  • Do you want your Bynder metaproperties to be included in the XMP metadata as well? If so, decide on the mapping you want to be implemented. See this section for more information.
  • Is it required to include the default Bynder fields? If yes, do you want them to be exported to the default tag or do you need to write the value to another tag?

How to Download Assets With Metadata

  1. Navigate to the asset you want to download.
  2. Check the box next to Include XMP metadata in the Asset Details view. 

    Note

    If you want to make this required, the box will be checked by default.

  3. Click one or more of the available files to start the download. Alternatively, you can click Download all files to download all the files at once.

Write Bynder Metadata to Specific Metadata Fields

If your portal is configured to update the existing file metadata, the default metadata such as title, description, copyright, modification date, creation date, publication date, and tags will be written to the default file metadata tags unless otherwise configured. Below is a list of the default tags that Bynder uses. For example, your Bynder asset Title will be written to the default XMP:Title metadata tag.

If you don't want this metadata to be written to the default metadata tags, we can set it up so they are written to a specific metadata tag. For example, instead of writing the Bynder Title to the default XMP:Title tag, it can be instead written to XMP-photoshop:Headline. Contact your Customer Success Manager who can assist you in setting this up if you’re on the legacy taxonomy or see instructions below if you’re on the new taxonomy.

Write Metaproperties to Custom Metadata Tags

You can export metaproperties and their values to specific metadata tags. We support exporting to XMP, IPTC, and EXIF.

Legacy taxonomy instructions

  1. Navigate to Settings > Taxonomy > Metaproperties management.

  2. Click edit_icon.png next to the metaproperty you want to set up a metadata tag for.

  3. Enter the metadata tag name(s) in the Write metadata to namespace field in the following format: {System}{-namespace}:{TagName}, where TagName is mandatory.

    • We only support the following combinations:

      • {System}{-namespace}:{Tagname}

      • {System}:{Tagname}

      • {Tagname}

    • Examples:

      • XMP:Description = Any common tag called Description inside of the XMP metadata system.

      • EXIF:ImageDescription = Tag called ImageDescription inside of the EXIF metadata system.

      • XMP-dc:Subject = Tag called Subject inside of the XMP metadata system under the namespace Dublin Core or ‘dc’.

      • IPTC:Headline = Tag called Headline in the IPTC system.

  4. Comma separate the values if you want to map multiple metadata tags.

  5. Enable the Export field option.

  6. Click Save.

Export metadata

The new taxonomy allows you to configure various settings for asset download.

  1. Navigate to Settings > Advanced Settings > Portal settings.
  2. Click Embedded metadata configuration in the left sidebar and then the On asset download tab.
  3. CSV download: Enable this setting to allow users with the appropriate permission to download a CSV of the metadata for selected assets.
  4. XMP download: Enable this setting to embed the XMP metadata in the downloaded assets. If enabled, you can select which of the XMP metadata should be embedded.
  5. Required download: Enable to ensure that the XMP metadata is always embedded in the downloaded assets.
  6. Update the existing XMP metadata: Enable to map the Bynder metadata to metadata fields upon download.
    • Default Bynder metadata: If you don’t want the default metadata to be written to the default metadata tags, add the metadata tag that you do want the metadata written to, separated by a comma.
    • Metaproperties: You can map Bynder metaproperties and their values to specific metadata tags. We support exporting to XMP, IPTC, and EXIF.
      • In the Metaproperties column, click the dropdown to select a Bynder metaproperty.
      • In the Metadata tags column, paste the exact name of the metadata tag that you’d like to write the metaproperty to.
      • Click Add metaproperty to add additional mapping.
  7. Click Save changes.

Download a CSV file with all metadata

You can download the metadata of a selection of assets in a CSV. In the CSV file you will find the metadata that is currently available in the portal. For example, if a Description was updated for an asset, the updated Description will be included in the CSV file.
