Content Provenance and Authenticity in Bynder (C2PA & SynthID)

As AI-generated content becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from human-created content, content authenticity and trust matter more than ever. Content provenance provides a verifiable record of where an asset came from, who created it, and how it has been edited or transformed, giving your team a transparent, trustworthy history for every file in your DAM.

Bynder plays an active role in supporting content provenance across the content supply chain, from preserving it on incoming assets to extending it as new content is created within the platform. Bynder is a member of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), reflecting our ongoing commitment to open content provenance standards.

Why?

As generative AI becomes a standard part of content production, teams need a reliable way to answer basic trust questions: Is this asset original or AI-generated? Has it been edited, and by what tool? Content provenance gives teams a verifiable way to answer these questions, without relying on manual notes or tribal knowledge, and helps teams stay ahead of emerging brand, legal, and platform requirements around AI disclosure. 

Bynder supports this through two industry provenance standards: C2PA, an open technical standard established by a coalition of leading technology and media organizations for attaching tamper-evident "Content Credentials" to a file, and SynthID, Google's watermarking technology for identifying AI-generated media.

How?

Bynder currently supports content provenance in the following ways:

  1. GenAI Smart Edit: Image variations created using Bynder's GenAI Smart Edit capability carry both C2PA Content Credentials and SynthID watermarking, giving you a verifiable record that the variation was AI-generated and how it was produced.
  2. Original Assets: When an asset is uploaded to Bynder, any existing C2PA Content Credentials on the original file are preserved rather than stripped, so the provenance record continues down the content supply chain from the moment it enters your DAM.
  3. Manual Derivatives & Additional Files: C2PA Content Credentials are likewise preserved on manually uploaded derivatives and additional files, keeping the provenance trail intact across these file types.

FAQs

How does content provenance relate to the EU AI Act?

Article 50 of the EU AI Act has applied since 2 August 2026 and requires providers of generative AI tools to mark their output in a machine-readable way, so it can be identified as AI-generated. The C2PA Content Credentials and SynthID watermark on GenAI Smart Edit variations are recognised ways of doing this, and Bynder preserves that record once the asset enters your DAM

Does Bynder visually watermark AI-generated content when it's downloaded from the DAM? 

No. A Bynder-specific or custom visual watermark wouldn't be verifiable against an industry standard, so this isn't something Bynder does automatically or recommends. Instead, Bynder preserves and applies recognized provenance standards

Should I treat C2PA Content Credentials as a guarantee of authenticity? 

Treat the presence of C2PA Content Credentials as a signal to check, not a guarantee on its own. Always pair provenance data with your team's internal review process for sensitive or public-facing content.
