Download Assets with Customized Names

By default, when you download an asset from the Bynder Asset Library, the file is named according to the original filename used during upload. However, if you prefer to download files using the updated asset title or a customized naming convention, this can be enabled as an additional feature.

Once enabled, this feature can provide more user-friendly file names based on your preferred structure.

This feature/solution requires Customer Support to enable, but then individual permissions can be done by the Bynder Admin.

How?

How to Set Up a Custom Naming Convention

  1. Contact Customer Support to enable the custom download naming feature on your portal.

  2. Navigate to portal settings as a Bynder Admin to establish your preferred naming pattern.

  3. Select the metaproperties and fields used to define the file name.

    • Example pattern with title: year-country-state-city-company-filetitle.jpg (e.g., 2024-USA-Massachusetts-Boston-Bynder-example123.jpg)

    • Example pattern without title: year-country-state-city-company.jpg

  4. Save your configuration. Future asset downloads will follow your specified naming structure.

Note: If required metaproperties in your pattern are missing values for a specific asset, the system defaults to the original filename upon download.

Important Notes

  • Missing Asset Titles: If an asset lacks a title and the pattern relies on the title field, the system uses the original filename by default.

  • Forbidden Characters: Asset titles cannot contain a question mark (?), as it is a reserved HTTP protocol character that prevents successful file downloads.

  • Capitalization Rules: The capitalization of the downloaded file name matches the exact labels of your configured metaproperty options (e.g., 2022-France-Paris-Bynder.jpg versus 2022-france-paris-bynder.jpg).

  • Public Links: Public links do not support naming patterns that use metaproperty options.

FAQ

How do you rename an asset in Bynder so that the asset downloads with the new name?

By default, asset downloads always use the original upload filename, even if you update the asset title in Bynder. The original filename cannot be edited directly in the Bynder user interface.

To download files with updated names, choose one of the following approaches:

  • Without the feature: Rename the file on your local device, then re-upload the asset to Bynder with the updated filename.

  • With the feature: Request Customer Support to enable customized download names. Once enabled, asset downloads will automatically reflect updated asset titles or custom metaproperty patterns.
