How to Upload and Manage Fonts In Studio

Summary

The Fonts page in Studio is where administrators add and manage typography for creative designs and templates. Administrators can upload new font files, set brand defaults, deactivate outdated styles, or permanently delete unneeded fonts. Centralized font management keeps every Studio project compliant with your organization's brand identity.

Who?

This feature requires the Admin role in Studio. Users with lower permission levels can use active fonts in designs and templates, but cannot manage or upload fonts.

Why?

Managing fonts in Studio provides key benefits for brand governance:

  • Brand Consistency: Ensures creative teams and content creators only use approved brand typography in templates and designs.

  • Streamlined Updates: Updating or replacing a font updates matching text elements across all active Studio templates and designs.

  • Control and Flexibility: Safely test or deprecate fonts by deactivating them without breaking existing design layouts.

How?

Open the Fonts Page

  1. In the top navigation, click Studio.

  2. In the left sidebar, under Brand, click Fonts.

Each card on the page represents a font family and displays a preview, the font name, and the available weight count. Click any card to inspect individual styles or weights. Click the back arrow to return to the full font list.

Upload Fonts

You can upload 1 font file or several files at once. Studio supports TrueType (.ttf) and OpenType (.otf) font files. When you upload files, Studio reads the embedded metadata and automatically groups styles into font families.

  1. On the Fonts page, click Add font.

  2. In the file browser, select the font file or files you want to upload. To select multiple files, hold Command (Mac) or Control (Windows) while clicking.

  3. Click Open.

  4. Once processing finishes, a notification confirms Upload successful, and the new font appears in your library.

Note: If a file fails to upload, a notification indicates the specific reason (such as missing metadata). Correct the file metadata and attempt the upload again. Uploading a file that matches an existing style overwrites the current file.

Set a Default Font

The default font applies automatically to new text elements and acts as a fallback if an imported design references a missing font.

  1. Click a font card, then navigate to the specific font weight you want as the default.

  2. Click the top-left context menu icon (three dots) on the weight card and select Set as default font.

  3. In the confirmation dialog, review the operational warning.

  4. Select I understand and wish to continue.

  5. Click Set new default.

Note: You cannot deactivate or delete the active default font. To remove or deactivate a default font, assign a new default font first.

Deactivate Fonts

Deactivating a font prevents users from selecting it in new designs and templates while preserving it in existing assets. You can reactivate deactivated fonts at any time.

  1. Hover over the font card you want to deactivate.

  2. Click the selection circle in the top-right corner of the card. A blue outline and check mark confirm your selection. Select additional cards if you want to deactivate multiple fonts.

  3. In the action bar above the font cards, click the Deactivate icon (an eye with a line through it).

  4. In the dialog box, click Deactivate selected.

A notification confirms Fonts deactivated, and the font card receives a Deactivated badge. Users can no longer choose these fonts in new designs and templates. Text and styles using a deactivated font continue using it until manually changed.

Activate Fonts

Activate a deactivated font to make it available again.

  1. Select the card of any font displaying the Deactivated badge.

  2. In the action bar above the font cards, click the Activate icon (an eye icon).

  3. Click Activate selected.

A notification confirms Fonts activated, the badge is removed, and the font becomes available again in the design editor.

Replace a Font Across All Studio Designs

To retire an old font family or weight, you can replace every instance of that weight across all existing designs and templates in a single step.

  1. Navigate to the specific font weight you want to replace.

  2. Click the top-left context menu icon and select Replace.

  3. In the Replace font dialog, review the warning detailing that all existing text instances will update.

  4. From the dropdown menu, select whether to upload a new font file or select an existing weight from your Studio Font library.

  5. Select I understand and wish to continue, then click Continue.

  6. Select your target font weight from your local drive or Studio library.

  7. Click Replace.

All text elements using the original font weight automatically update to the replacement font. Because character dimensions differ between typefaces, review your active templates after replacing a font to check for line breaks or text box overflow.

Delete Fonts

Deleting a font permanently removes it from Studio. Designs using a deleted font automatically switch to your default font.

  1. Hover over the font card or specific font weight and click the selection circle in the top-right corner.

  2. In the action bar above the font cards, click the Delete icon (trash can icon).

  3. Review the confirmation dialog warning. The dialog explains that the font will no longer be available in any design or template, and that Studio uses your default font instead.

  4. Select I understand and wish to continue to enable the action button.

  5. Click Delete.

A “Font deleted” notification appears, and the font is removed from the page.

Best Practices & Technical Limitations

  • Deactivate before deleting: Deactivating is completely reversible and keeps existing layouts untouched. Deletion permanently replaces fonts with the account default.

  • Font display names: Font family names are generated directly from the file metadata and cannot be edited manually within Studio.

  • Weight-by-weight replacement: Font replacements occur one weight at a time rather than in bulk across an entire family.

  • No version history: Re-uploading a font file overwrites the existing file version on record.

FAQs

Why can't I deactivate or delete a font?

You cannot deactivate or delete your active default font. Set another font as the default first by opening a font weight, clicking the context menu icon (three dots), and selecting Set as default font. Once a new default is set, try deactivating or deleting the original font.

What happens to designs that use a deleted font?

Designs and templates using a deleted font automatically switch to your default font. Because different fonts have unique line heights and letter spacing, text can wrap differently or overflow its frame. Review your active designs after deleting a font to confirm formatting.

Which font files can I upload?

You can upload individual font files in TrueType (.ttf) or OpenType (.otf) formats.

What happens if one of my files fails to upload?

Studio uploads all valid files and displays a notification for any file that fails, stating the specific reason (such as missing font name metadata). Fix the file metadata and attempt the upload again.

What happens if I upload a font that is already in my library?

The new file overwrites the existing font file in your library. The font retains its current active or deactivated status.

How do I find deactivated fonts?

Deactivated fonts remain in your font library and display a Deactivated badge on their card.
