Bynder users can easily browse and find digital assets using smartfilters. Smartfilters are user-friendly drop-down menus that display at the top of the Asset Bank. Each smartfilter can store one or several metaproperties. Each metaproperty in the smartfilter will display a counter next to each option so that users can locate assets with just a few clicks.
In addition to the search bar, smartfilters are the primary way users can find content in the Asset Bank. A smartfilter drop-down menu can display one metaproperty for users to select from, such as ‘Year.’ It can also contain multiple metaproperties and can be especially useful for metaproperties that are related to each other. For example, the 'Continent,' 'Country,' and 'City' metaproperties below are displayed in one smartfilter because they are logically related and dependent on each other in Bynder.

Add metaproperties to a smartfilter
To add metaproperties to a smartfilter, you will first need to create a smartfilter with the type set to meta. Once you have done so, follow the steps below to add one or multiple metaproperties to the smartfilter.
- Navigate to
Settings > Taxonomy > Smartfilter Management.
- Click
next to the filter to which you’d like to add metaproperties.
- Under the Metaproperty column, click the drop-down list and select the metaproperty you want to add to the filter.
Note
-
In the legacy taxonomy Select, Select2, and Autocomplete metaproperties and in the new taxonomy Single and Multi Select metaproperties are supported in smartfilters.
-
Metaproperties display their database Name in the Metaproperty drop-down list but will display by their Label in the smartfilter in the Asset Bank.
-
A metaproperty can only be added to one smartfilter. If you add a metaproperty to multiple smartfilters, it will only show under the first smartfilter it was added to.
-
- Type: Defines the behavior of metaproperties added to the smartfilter.
Available types:
-
smart-single: Select when more than one metaproperty is added to the smartfilter. This will display each metaproperty’s options as a selectable list.
-
select: Select when only one metaproperty is added to the smartfilter. This will display the metaproperty’s options as a selectable list.
-
autocomplete: This will display a search bar in the smartfilter that autocompletes options when a user types them in. We typically recommend for metaproperties with 1,000+ options.
Note
Users can search using a combination of partial terms and special characters. Also they can use the AND, OR and NOT search operators as well as a quotation marks ("") for exact search and an asterisk (*) for a wildcard search. The back slash (\) can be used to search for an asterisk as a special character and not use it as a wildcard. For example: Flamin\*
-
grid: Select when images/icons have been applied to metaproperty options and Show image/icon is enabled. Displays options in a grid.
-
-
Show image/icon: Displays images or icons applied to metaproperty options. Learn more about adding an image or icon to metaproperty options here.
-
Show counter: Displays the number of assets tagged with each metaproperty option. We recommend always enabling.
-
Z-index: Defines the order of the metaproperties in the filter.
-
Columns: This setting has been depreciated and removed from the setup.
-
Dependency: Select the metaproperty on which the metaproperty you are editing should be dependent. Learn more about setting up smartfilter dependencies here.
-
Show options based on dependencies: When you have selected a dependent metaproperty, check this box so that the only options that display in the child filter are the ones that are dependent on the option chosen in the parent filter.
-
Multi filter: Allows users to select multiple values within one metaproperty in the smartfilter. This will treat the search as an “OR.”
-
Show empty options: Allows users to search for assets that have not been tagged with this metaproperty. This is useful for cleanup and to ensure that all assets are tagged with a particular metaproperty.
-
Click
next to the metaproperty row to save. Make sure to save the row immediately after making edits to it. You will lose your work if you start editing another row before saving the previous one.
-
To add another metaproperty, click
.
By default, if a filter contains multiple metaproperties, all of these metaproperties and their options will display when a user clicks on the smartfilter. You can reduce how many metaproperties initially display within the smartfilter by making a metaproperty dependent on another. For example, the Destinations filter displays the ’Continent’ and ’Country’ metaproperties at the same time. If you set the ‘Country’ metaproperty to be dependent on the ‘Continent’ metaproperty in the filter, then the filter will only display the ’Continent’ list at first. Then, after you select a specific continent, like Europe, the ‘Country’ column, the options dependent on Europe will display.
-
Navigate to
Settings > Account > Smartfilter management.
- Click
next to the filter that you’d like to edit.
-
In the Dependency column, select the dependent metaproperty. For example:
-
Check the box next to Show options based on dependencies.
-
Click
.
Delete a smartfilter
- Navigate to
Settings > Account > Smartfilter management.
- Click
next to the metaproperty that you would like to delete.
- Click Delete to confirm.
- Note: This action cannot be undone.
