A derivative is a variation of the original asset. Very often a derivative is a smaller version of the original asset. Many other variations can be set up as well. For example, a derivative with the same dimensions as the original asset but with a different file extension.
By using derivatives you can save yourself and other users a lot of time. You'll no longer need to download your files first to then edit and re-upload them.
Derivatives are mainly used outside Bynder. For example, for (mobile) websites, email newsletters, PIMs and other external systems that don't need to make use of the original high quality file. A smaller size will load faster compared to the original image. Our integrations often make use derivatives as well.

You can use derivatives in many ways. Derivatives can be implemented into external websites and systems. Using smaller versions instead of a high quality files make your images load faster and will improve the end user experience.
Setting up derivatives can also be a huge time saver, since all the variations and image modifications can be automatically made in your Bynder portal during upload. Users will no longer have to download the files first, to then edit and re-upload them. This saves everyone time.
Dynamic Asset Transformations (DAT) give you even more flexibility. Instead of setting up predefined derivatives you can create asset transformations on the fly.
You might want to use derivatives to protect your source files. You can make the original files not downloadable for specific permissions profiles and allow these users to only download non-public derivatives.
Enable the Download non-public asset derivatives permission for specific permissions profiles so that these users can only download non-public derivatives. This permission excludes downloading the original asset or derivatives marked as public.
Note
Make sure the Download orginal assets permission is not enabled for the permission profiles that should only be able to download non-public derivatives.

If you want your derivatives to be automatically generated, contact your Customer Success Manager. We can also create derivatives of video files.
If the resolution of your original images is sufficient, Bynder creates the following default derivatives:

mini: 80x80 pixels
-
thul: 250x250 pixels
-
webimage: 800x600 pixels
The resolution of your default derivatives may deviate slightly from the dimensions mentioned above depending on the aspect ratio of your original images.
We can set custom resolution for your derivatives and we support JPG, PNG and TIFF as output formats. When creating a derivative with custom resolution, Bynder uses the longer side to create the derivative. If your image is, for example 800 by 600 pixels, the 800 pixels side is used for resizing. The 600 pixels side is scaled according to the aspect ratio.
We can't upscale the original image, which means the system can't create derivatives with larger dimensions than the original file. Upscaling would lead to quality loss. For example, we can't create a 800 by 800 pixels derivative if the original file is only 400 by 400 pixels. Vector files are an exception to this rule, which for example means that an original EPS vector file of 400 by 400 pixels can be upscaled to 800 by 800 pixels.
In addition to custom file dimensions, we can also set up a custom DPI value for your derivatives. For instance, we can automatically generate a 300 DPI derivative of your original 600 DPI image file.
If you don't want your files to be resized according to the aspect ratio we can enable an automatic crop for you. When cropping we can use the exact custom resolution. The derivative is then created from the center point of the image. Alternatively, if you edit an asset and set a focus point, the derivative for this asset is automatically adjusted to be cropped and resized from the focus point.
If you need images that have default dimensions and the aspect ratio preserved to use in your webshop, we can resize the image according to the longer side and aspect ratio, and the remaining canvas size will be filled with a blank space to meet your fixed dimensions.
It's also possible to determine when a derivative should be generated based on the filename of the original file. With regular expressions (regex) we can configure that a derivative should only be generated when the filename of the original file meets specific criteria. For example, when you only want a specific derivative to be created for your logo images we can ensure that the derivative is only generated when the filename contains logo. For all other assets this derivative won't be available.
Vice versa, we can also configure that a derivative isn't created when the original filename meets specific criteria. For example, if you don't want a derivative to be generated when the filename of the original file contains icon.
We can customize the derivatives to be created in specific output formats only (JPG, PNG, or TIFF), to be created for the assets with specific regular expressions, to be publicly available, to be created for assets that are in specific formats (for example, for JPG assets only), or to be generated in a one of the three color spaces (RGB/CMYK/inherit).
The inherit option ensures that the embedded color profile in the uploaded file is used to generate the derivative. This way, the derivative will be generated with the right colours. Inheriting the color profile is the best way to make sure that the color profile of the derivative will be identical to the color profile of the original file. If you want to make use of this option, make sure that you upload files which have an embedded color profile.
If there's no embedded color profile available in the uploaded file, the system will fall back to a default color profile. For the RGB color space this will be the sRGB color profile. For the CMYK color space we can set up a custom fallback color profile for you. If no custom fallback profile has been set up, the system will default to the ISO Coated v2 300% (ECI) profile. PNG derivatives can also be customized to preserve transparency, and for JPGs we can define the desired quality.

In general the file size of a derivative will be smaller than the file size of the original image but there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, due to different compression techniques an original JPG file of 300KB can have a PNG derivative of 1MB.

Derivatives are stored in your portal and, therefore, count toward your storage.

Currently our image derivative setup is not fully applicable to the following file formats:

AI and PDF
We only support RGB derivatives for AI and PDF files. CMYK derivatives or derivatives which inherit the color profile of the original file cannot be created when the original file is in the AI or PDF file format.

DNG
We cannot create derivatives for DNG file when the original DNG file does not contain a preview file. Derivatives are based on this preview file, so make sure your original DNG files have a preview file inside.

TIFF When the original file is a TIFF file the transparency cannot be preserved when:

The file includes transparent clipping paths, which often occurs when the TIFF file is saved in Adobe Photoshop.

The TIFF file contains more than one alpha channel or a custom alpha channel.
-
The ExtraSamples metadata field of the TIFF file contains an unsupported value such as Unspecified. Only one of the following two values is supported:

unassociated alpha

Dynamic Asset Transformation (DAT) give you the flexility to create asset variations on the spot by adding parameters to a base URL.
By using Dynamic Asset Transformations that are optimized for the platform and/or device your users are working on you can ensure that they have the best user experience possible.
The default video derivative is used for preview playback in Bynder. By default, the maximum video quality for video previews is 480p, however 720P, 1080P is also possible.
If you want to change the resolution of video previews to 720p or 1080p, please contact your Customer Success Manager.
We support the following derivatives:

MP4, TS or WebM as container / extension / type

H264 or VP9 as video codec

AAC or Ogg Vorbis as audio codec
Note
The default video derivative is used for preview playback in Bynder. The video can be up to 480P, however 720P, 1080P is also possible
We can customize the video encoding, audio encoding, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, sample rate, frames between keyframes, number of reference frames, profile and level. Video derivatives can be made publicly available.
If you want to enable custom video derivatives please contact your Customer Success Manager.
In some cases you may want to customize your files in a more advanced way using your preferred software, such as converting your image to grayscale. The manual derivative feature allows you make the customizations outside of Bynder and to then easily upload it back to Bynder as manual derivative. Read more about it here.
Are you using your derivatives on external websites and do you want to protect your assets? Apply a watermark to your derivatives to make sure you can always recognize your assets and reduce the risk of them being misused. Read more about it here.
Both image and video derivatives are stored in your portal and, therefore, count toward your storage. Read more about storage and requesting additional storage here.
To enable the derivatives for you, we need to know the resolution you require. Normally, we advise the image derivatives to be the following:

Over time you may want to update your derivative setup and sometimes even have derivatives fully removed. Changing your derivative setup can have consequences for your existing assets as well. Your Customer Success Manager can give your more details on these implications and further assist you in implementing the necessary changes.
