Working with Masks in Studio – Bynder Support

You can create and use masks layer masks can be applied to all elements, images, texts, shapes, and groups, and can apply to transitions, animations, and effects. Masking can be used to limit text to a defined box. Layer masking is a design technique used to perform targeted edits in images and video, such as hiding parts of a design element without erasing them.

Designers can use other shapes or assets to control the transparency of an element and make image composites. While element opacity controls the transparency of the entire element at once, a mask gives more precise controls over specific areas and allows designers to create more complex designs without the need for external software.

Create a mask

Navigate to Studio
Either create a new design or edit an existing one.
Click Edit Design.
There are two ways to add a mask to an element:
- New shape element
- Existing shape element or group

Note

The element that is used as a mask will be hidden on the canvas but is visible in the layer or timeline editor.

If you mask an element that contains an alpha channel, the transparency in the alpha will appear in the mask.

A New Shape Element

1. Select the element that you want to mask.
2. In the right-hand side Property list select Mask.
3. Select + New shape element from the dropdown.
4. This will automatically create a rectangle shape mask to the selected element.
5. The element will now only be visible within the confines of the shape.

An Existing Element or Group

1. Select the item that you want to mask.
2. In the right-hand side Property list select Mask.
3. Select + New shape element from the dropdown.
4. Search for an existing element or group from the dropdown.
5. Create a new shape element

Note

Name your mask element so it is easier to find in the list.

Masking in Video

Masks in video designs can be animated.
The supported file type that contains alpha is Quicktime Prores 4444.
You can use Quicktime Videos with alpha as a mask.
