Upload assets with metadata (extract original metadata)

  • Updated

When you take photos or save your assets in editing software, such as Adobe Lightroom or Bridge, chances are high that metadata is automatically written to or embedded in your assets. Bynder can automatically read and add this embedded metadata to your Bynder metaproperties.

By default, Bynder extracts certain metadata upon upload and adds the information to the default Bynder metaproperties, such as the asset title, description, copyright, and tags. In addition, you can map other embedded metadata to your metaproperties upon upload as well. Common use cases for embedded metadata beyond the defaults could include product information, packaging details, location data, language, and subject information. This way, you and other uploaders no longer have to manually tag the assets with the metadata that has already been added outside of Bynder.

Extract XMP Metadata When Uploading Assets

You can use the metadata already embedded in your assets to save uploaders the time of having to manually tag assets and reduce the risk of human error at the same time. When files are tagged with metadata using cameras, photo editing software (like Adobe Lightroom or Bridge), or other systems, you can use this data to automatically add to your metaproperties during upload in Bynder.

Any EXIF, XMP or IPTC tag can be used, however, the only fully custom metadata tags that we support are those based on the XMP-metadata standard.

Default metadata

The following default metadata is always extracted and embedded in your assets once they are uploaded to Bynder, regardless of settings. This cannot be disabled.

Extract & Embed EXIF, XMP, and IPTC Metadata

Any EXIF, XMP or IPTC tag can be extracted and mapped to your files within Bynder. However, the only fully custom metadata tags that we support are those based on the XMP-metadata standard.

  • Determine which specific Exif data you want to map to Bynder. Use a tool such as the Exiftool to read the Exif information of your file(s). Analyze multiple assets, so that you have a good understanding of the metadata tags your data is written to, since this can vary when your files come from different sources.

How to use Exiftool

  1. Visit Exiftool
  2. Select the appropriate package (Windows or MacOS)
  3. Open Terminal.
  4. Type exiftool and press space.
  5. Drag the file you would like to read into Terminal and press Enter.
  6. Scroll through the metadata and look for the name of the metadata embedded in the asset.
  7. This information can be used to write the metaproperty in your Bynder DAM.

Tip

If the information you want to map to Bynder not always available in the same Exif field and instead saved to multiple Exif fields with (slightly) different naming, you can map all Exif fields to the same metaproperty in Bynder.

  • Copy the exact name of the metadata tags that you want to map to Bynder.

Legacy taxonomy instructions

  • In Bynder, navigate to Settings > Taxonomy > Metaproperties management and edit the metaproperty you want to map this metadata to by clicking edit_icon.png.
  • Paste the exact name of the metadata tag in the Metadata tag field. Comma separate the values in case you want to map multiple metadata tags.

Note

If multiple mapped Exif fields contain data, the data of the field first in line will be used in Bynder.

  • (Optional) Select the Display field and Main Filter options as well if you want the metaproperty and the metadata to be visible in the Asset Detail View as well.
  • Click Save.

New taxonomy instructions

  • In Bynder, navigate to Settings > Advanced Settings > Portal settings.
  • Click Embedded metadata configuration in the left sidebar and ensure that you’re in the On asset upload tab.
  • Default metadata fields: Click View default fields to review the default metadata that is always extracted and embedded in your assets once they are uploaded to Bynder, regardless of settings.
  • Paste the exact name of the metadata tag in the Custom metadata fields box. Comma separate the values in case you want to map multiple metadata tags.
  • Click the Metaproperties dropdown to select the Bynder metaproperty that the metadata should be mapped to.
  • Click Add custom field to add additional mappings.
  • Click Save changes.
