Bynder automatically extracts certain metadata during uploads and applies it to predefined metaproperties such as asset titles, descriptions, copyright, and tags. Upon upload, you can map additional embedded metadata to your custom metaproperties. This includes details like product information, packaging specifications, location data, language, or subject matter. Using this feature helps streamline the upload process, reducing the need for manual tagging and minimizing the risk of human error.
Embedded metadata from cameras, photo editing tools (such as Adobe Lightroom or Bridge), or other systems can be leveraged to automatically populate your metaproperties in Bynder. Supported metadata formats include EXIF, XMP, and IPTC tags. While any tag within these formats can be used, fully custom metadata tags must adhere to the XMP metadata standard to ensure compatibility.

Extract & Embed EXIF, XMP, and IPTC Metadata
Any EXIF, XMP, or IPTC tag can be extracted and mapped to your files within Bynder. However, we only support fully custom metadata tags based on the XMP metadata standard.
- Determine which specific Exif data you want to map to Bynder. Use a tool such as Exiftool to read the Exif information for your file(s). Analyze multiple assets to understand the metadata tags your data is written to since this can vary when your files come from different sources.
How to UseExifTool
- Navigate to ExifTool
- Select the appropriate package (Windows or MacOS)
- Open Terminal.
- Type ExifTool and press space.
- Drag the file you would like to read into Terminal and press Enter.
- Scroll through the metadata and look for the name of the metadata embedded in the asset.
- This information can be used to write the metaproperty in your Bynder DAM.

Tip
Suppose the information you want to map to Bynder is not always available in the same Exif field and is saved to multiple Exif fields with (slightly) different names. In that case, you can map all Exif fields to the same metaproperty in Bynder.
- Copy the exact name of the metadata tags you want to map to Bynder.
FAQ
When I make changes in Embedded Metadata Configuration, can I apply these changes to existing assets?
No, if you change the Embedded Metadata settings, your changes will only apply to uploaded assets after you make them. If you want your changes to apply to all pre-existing assets, please contact Customer Support.
