Taxonomy serves as the foundation of the Bynder DAM system. The new Taxonomy Management feature enhances the process of setting up and managing your DAM's taxonomy, providing a more user-friendly interface. While some terms and functions remain consistent, such as metaproperties and options, there are also new features and renamed elements. This guide will highlight the similarities and differences between the old and new taxonomy management systems.
Not sure which taxonomy your portal has?
- Navigate to Settings > Taxonomy > Metaproperties management.
- If your portal looks like this then you are on the new taxonomy.
- If your portal looks like this using the legacy taxonomy. Please contact your Customer Success Manager, who can help enable the new taxonomy in your portal.
New Taxonomy
Legacy TaxonomyMetaproperties and Metaproperty Options
We’ve reduced the number of settings to make setup and configuration easier. A preview has been introduced for clarity.
Metaproperty Name & Label
In the new taxonomy, you only need to enter the label rather than the database name and the label. However, you can still access the database name in the metaproperty or option details if necessary.
NOTE: In the New Taxonomy, the Database name is automatically created based on the Metaproperty Name (Label). Any special characters and diacritics will be replaced with the underscore "_."
If you need to refer to a Metaproperty Option in your code, you can use the external reference field instead of the database name. For additional information, refer to the Bynder APIary.
Metaproperty Types
In the new taxonomy, you will still be able to create metaproperties that display as a picklist, dropdown, text, or date, although the names for these types have been updated to Single, Multi-select, Text, and Date.
- Select: We’ve replaced the Select type with the Single, Multi-select metaproperty types.
-
Autocomplete: For single and multi-select metaproperty types, you can now enable the autocomplete search and add new options settings.
- Text & long text: We’ve consolidated text and long text into one text metaproperty type.
- Sidebar: Deprecated.
- Date: Still available in the new taxonomy as the date metaproperty type.
- Linked assets: Bynder needs to configure This, so please contact your Customer Success Manager.
- Brand store categories: Deprecated.
- Knowledge: Deprecated.
- Button: Deprecated.
- Workflow job: This needs to be configured by Bynder, so please reach out to your Customer Success Manager.
- Select2: We’ve replaced the select2 metaproperty type with the autocomplete search setting, which can be enabled for the new single and multi-select metaproperty types.
Hide Metaproperties & Visibility
In the new taxonomy, you can still hide metaproperties in the upload, edit, or asset detail screens from certain users, groups, or permission profiles in the new Visibility section. This replaces the Hide Metaproperty section. This prevents those users from seeing metaproperties that aren’t relevant to them.
Metaproperty option-based permissions & Access Rights
You can still manage the visibility of your assets at the metaproperty option level, now called Access Rights. This page has not been changed.
Language Labels vs Translations
If enabled in your portal, you can continue to include the language labels, now referred to as translations, for the metaproperties and options.
Z-index vs Drag & Drop Ordering
With the new taxonomy, you’ll be able to drag and drop the metaproperties and options into the appropriate order, rather than needing to enter a number into the z-index.
You can also easily sort the options alphabetically (replacing order options by label or z-index) and pin certain options to the top of the list.
Deleting Metaproperties
Admin can now delete metaproperties in addition to metaproperty options.
Show Metaproperties in List and Grid Views
We’ve created a new screen for displaying metaproperties in the list and grid views of the Asset Bank.
Dependencies & Custom Triggers vs Automation
We have combined dependencies and custom triggers into a new feature called automation. Automations enable you to set up conditional actions that trigger different events. With automation, you can establish linked fields (replacing dependencies), control asset downloads (replacing custom triggers), prefill or clear text metaproperties (replacing custom triggers), and designate assets as watermarked, archived, or for limited use (replacing custom triggers).
Previously, it was recommended to create a custom trigger for the opposite action (e.g., if a user were to deselect a metaproperty option). However, with the new automation feature, this is no longer necessary.
Important Information about Automation
Once you've been upgraded, all connections and actions linked to the old classification system will be moved to automation. Each automation you create will be visible in the automation section for all related categories. This will help you easily identify which categories and settings are impacted by specific automation and troubleshoot any issues if needed.
For instance, if you set up an automation where selecting the Asset Type of Images or Videos triggers the appearance of the Asset Sub-Type of Stock, this automation will be shown for both the Asset Type and Asset Sub-Type. In the legacy taxonomy, this connection would only be visible in the dependencies section for the Stock Asset Sub-Type.

Smart Filters
The process for creating smart filters is still the same; however, we have migrated a few settings, such as the empty options in filter and multifilter settings, to the smart filters management page.

There has been no change to the tags management page at this time.
